Great Tips to Help You Choose the Best Pool Fencing for You

Are you among the 2.7 million Australians who own a swimming pool? If so, you're aware that pool ownership involves both initial installation costs and ongoing maintenance. One crucial aspect of maintaining a pool is the pool fence, which is a legal requirement across all Australian states. Pool fencing regulations can vary, encompassing both national and local guidelines.

Top Pool Fence Design Ideas for Your Australian Oasis

Pool Fencing Sydney

When planning your dream pool, it’s easy to get caught up in the fun aspects like choosing the perfect tiles or filtration system. However, one crucial element often overlooked is pool fencing.

Not only does it enhance safety—especially for kids and pets—but it also adds style and privacy to your outdoor space. Let’s explore some exciting pool fence design ideas that can elevate your backyard while keeping everyone safe.10 Pool Fence Design Ideas

You Should Consider

To help you navigate the world of pool fencing, we’ve compiled a list of popular design ideas divided into three categories: natural, traditional, and modern.

Natural Pool Fence Ideas

Rustic Wooden POOL Fences

Embrace a charming, old-world feel with wooden fences featuring simple carvings. They bring warmth and character to your pool area.

Stone Pool Fences

For a touch of luxury, consider solid stone fencing. Not only does it provide maximum privacy, but it also adds a high-end look to your pool.

Plant pool Fences

Incorporate nature with hedges or bamboo. These green barriers not only look great but also offer shade and a serene atmosphere.

Traditional Fence Design Ideas

Classic Wooden Pool Fences A timeless choice, wooden fences made from cypress or redwood provide both safety and a cozy feel to your pool area.

Mesh Pool Fences

While not the most visually appealing, mesh fences are affordable and easy to install, making them a practical option for many families.

Picket Pool Fences

Add a homey touch with white picket fences that beautifully complement garden spaces while keeping the pool area secure.

Modern Pool Fence Designs

Concrete and Brick Fences Combine durability with style by using concrete and brick. These materials create robust borders that can be customized to fit your aesthetic.

Aluminum Pool Fences

Sleek and strong, aluminum fences offer a modern look while being resistant to rust and corrosion—ideal for coastal areas.

Wrought Iron Pool Fences

For an elegant touch, wrought iron fences can feature decorative details that enhance the overall design of your outdoor space.

Glass Pool Fences

One of the latest trends, glass fencing provides a luxurious feel while offering unobstructed views of your pool area—perfect for showcasing your beautiful backyard.

Choosing the Right Style for Your Needs

Selecting the perfect pool fence involves considering various factors like material, style, and budget. Think about what will work best for your lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.Material Suggestions for Your Pool Fence

If you’re looking for quick installation, aluminum or simple wooden posts are great options. For something more substantial, consider concrete walls or steel wire fencing for added security.

Natural materials like timber or bamboo can create a warm atmosphere but may require more upkeep.Glass and stone fences are excellent choices if you want to make a statement; glass offers stunning views without barriers, while stone provides privacy and elegance.Cost Considerations

Wooden and metal fences may need occasional checks but generally last longer with minimal maintenance. In contrast, stone and glass fences are incredibly durable and often require little more than an occasional clean. Conclusion

Choosing the right pool fence is vital for ensuring safety while enhancing the beauty of your outdoor space. With so many styles available—from rustic wood to sleek glass—you can find the perfect fit for your home.

With a plethora of pool fencing options, from aluminium panels to innovative composite solutions, how do you select the best one for your needs? Here are three essential considerations:

Prioritise Pool Safety

Above all, your pool fence should prioritise safety, where pool accidents are a significant concern.

The primary purpose of a pool fence is to keep children safe by preventing unauthorised access to the pool area and reducing the risk of accidents. Here are some key safety considerations:

  • Height and Gates: In most states, pool fencing must be a minimum of 1200 mm tall, with gates that are self-closing and self-latching.
  • Material Strength: The fencing must be constructed from materials that cannot be easily breached or climbed by a child.
  • Gap Size: Ensure that there are no gaps in the fence design that a child could squeeze through, including gaps at the bottom.

To stay informed about safety regulations, consult your installer and local council or visit the Swimming Pool & Spa Association Australia (SPASA) for guidelines on safety barriers for swimming pools.

Set a Budget for Durability

While safety is paramount, pool fencing is a significant investment. Therefore, it's essential to choose a durable option that will stand the test of time. Regardless of the material you choose, your pool fence must be sturdy and meet Australian Standards. Popular materials for pool fencing include:

  • Glass: Glass fencing, available in frameless and semi-frameless options, provides an unobstructed view and a modern aesthetic. However, it can be costly, and the quality of glass panels can vary, so consider the warranty and maintenance requirements.
  • Wrought Iron: This option offers intricate designs and longevity but demands consistent maintenance to prevent rust and corrosion.
  • Aluminium: Ideal for coastal areas due to its rust-resistant properties, aluminum requires minimal maintenance but is not as strong as wrought iron.
  • Timber: While natural and beautiful, timber fences require continuous upkeep, including sanding, sealing, painting, and protection against pests like white ants.

Your choice should align with your budget and willingness to commit to maintenance.

What is the best type of fence for a pool?

Decide on Your Fencing Type

Selecting the right pool fencing type depends on your specific requirements. Here are some popular options to consider:

  • Glass Pool Fencing: Offers visibility and a spacious feel.
  • Wrought Iron Fencing: Provides an elegant and long-lasting option but requires a little maintenance.
  • Aluminium Pool Fencing: Resistant to rust and low maintenance, suitable for coastal areas.
  • Timber Pool Fencing: Natural and aesthetically pleasing but demands ongoing re painting.

Your choice should reflect your individual preferences and priorities.

For residents in North Shore Sydney, Chatswood, Lindfield, Wahroonga, finding the best pool fencing that suits your needs is essential. Whether you prioritise safety, aesthetics, or durability, understanding these factors will help you make an informed decision when choosing the ideal pool fencing for your property.

Did you know NSW has very strict
pool fencing regulations? Most pools constructed after 1990 must be fenced (with a few exceptions) and ALL pools including inflatable pools built after 2010 now require a fence separating the pool from the residence. There are regulations attached to pool gates also. Pool gates must open outwards and have self-closing and self-latching features, for example. As of 29 April 2016, not only must pools be fenced, all properties which are leased or sold in NSW must have a certificate of compliance or a certificate of occupation and a certificate of registration. If you are buying, selling or leasing a property and your pool fence or pool gate does not meet the regulations in order to obtain a certificate of compliance, give our pool fencing contractors a call. We can supply, install or repair your pool fence in order to help you obtain a certificate of compliance.

Hired these guys on behalf of my elderly mother and they certainly know there trade. I wasn't there when they fixed my mothers broken gate, but the response from her made me call them myself. They've increased the property's value with a new entry gate and the fence repair looks incredible. Thanks again.

Ash Denham

Absolute professional outfit, we had no issues whatsoever with their work, they got to our place on time, had our gate fitted up within a few hours, tidied up after themselves, nothing was too much trouble.  Highly recommended.

Brad Cumner
